Clowning Around!

A dear friend of mine wanted a special birthday cake for her husband and she decided on a clown cake.

Well, I've never made one before so I told her to try other cake shops for this type of cake. But since it was kind of last-minute, she turned to me once again and begged me to attempt this task. Along with the reason behind a clown cake was a sad story of how her husband never had a birthday 'do while growing up, and he always wanted to become a 'clown' if he wasn't that successful in becoming a lawyer...(can you imagine?)

btw, the cake is chocolate and butter cake....

Fire Truck Cake

At first, he wanted a garbage truck cake, then he wanted a fire truck cake...It was a working day and I had to rush home and the time? Not enough to bake, create and ice. So, I cheated a bit...

How? I bought a banana cake, cut it into few blocks, 'paste' them together with icing...and then concentrated (not really, with the 2 kids running around...) in making the icing, colouring them, then iced the cake, put it in the fridge and taking it out again...continue icing, what a process!

Finally, after about 2 hours or so, I told myself to stop (or else it won't get done coz' it was messy and far from being perfect) and hey, what's important was that my son approved it!

Ignore the messy bits, please...the cake was accessorized with bits and pieces of my son's toys such as the cone, little firemen, shovel and the firehydrant! Anything will do take make it look done!!!

There's my princess and prince blowing the candles!

some for the teachers...

It was my daughter's 6th birthday and she had been begging me for a cake to bring to her kinder for weeks before the big day. Finding time was the challenge. Somewhere after work and at 9-ish till midnite, I managed to whip this up. It was between a chocolate-covered cake and a flower cuppies cake. And the cuppies won because I want it to be different and knife-free and mess-free! Even the teacher thought it was a whole cake before my daughter started to take a cuppie one at a time to passed it to her friends!

Daddy's day

A father's day treat in a box.

Loooooong silence...

I has been a year since I last posted anything! For one thing, my hobbies have taken a back seat (the 5th row if I may add) to make way for my existing job which is simply exhausting! So, now and then, when I have the time (not so much) I bake. Mostly when there are reasons for baking like kids birthdays, occassions like father's day...and yeap, things like that. Need to find more time to sit back, relax and bake...like life once treated me in Melbourne (or the other way round..)...sigh, the good 'ol days..during this whole year, i managed to snap a few pics of my 'foodart' but didn't upload...well, here goes...

Mixing 'em up!

I love chocolate...but I love colours as well.

Given a choice, I would always take any chocolate covered sweet things, rather than the coloured ones.

But...I love presenting a mixture of colours AND chocolate. So, I decided to bake mini chocolate cakes with black and white theme, and pink and green and....see for yourself!

Strawberry cheesecake vs Chocolate cheesecake

Here are two very simple-to-make cheesecakes with different toppings. Strawberries vs. Chocolate ..both are simply delish!

The base is a mix of oreo cookies+Jacob crackers+Weetameal

(which explains the mixture of colours but tasted very nice!) The cheesecake is basically a mixture of cream cheese + whipping cream + sugar + eggs + lemon juice + a couple of tablespoons of flour and then, into the oven. No sweat!

The strawberry topping: Strawberries, sugar, water over heat.
The chocolate topping: Double-boiler chocolate pieces + milk.

Simple yet satisfying.

Slice Cheese Cake

So, what do you do when you feel like having cheese cake but there's no cream cheese in the fridge? Well, use the sliced cheese instead!

Maybe there's another name for it, but I found this recipe on the internet months ago, tried, tested AND loved it! It is soft and light, definitely return for seconds.

Recipe:
4-5 slice cheese
200ml milk
4 eggs (separate)
70gms butter/margarine
70gms sugar
70gms plain flour (sieved)
vanilla essence

Cut/Tear the slice cheese into small pieces and place it in a pot with the milk. Heat it on low till the cheese dissolves. Add butter till melted and switch off the heat. Let it cool. In another bowl, whip the egg whites till meringue. Put it aside. As for the egg yolks, whip it in another bowl, and further add the cheese+milk+butter mixture till combined. Then, add on plain flour bit by bit making sure the batter is smooth and no lumps visible. Finally, fold in the egg whites into the batter.
In a preheated oven, bake it about 170C for 50 minutes using the water bath method.

Upside Down Apple Cake

One of the easiest cakes to make is this one...I used green apples and the results: worth the effort..but then again, since this was too easy to make, what effort?
And the smell...who could resist...
(The recipe taken from myresipi.com- click the title of this post and it'll get you there)

This taste wonderful when served warm alone, or topped with a dollop of whipped cream or vanilla ice-cream. It can be kept in the fridge, and whenever you feel like eating a piece, just pop it in the microwave for a few seconds, and it will still taste nearly as good as it first came out of the oven. Trust me on this!

Pink, White & Chocolate themed cupcakes

These were orders from my cousin, which she told me to do whatever I like. So, I wanted something pretty but classy, so I chose these colours for the icing. The cake: chocolate moist cake and orange butter cake.

Cupcakes with custard powder

I found a recipe on the internet where custard powder was added in the batter. Haven't tried that before. Anyway, the results: not bad. It is definitely an added flavour and taste great when it just came out of the oven. I did some decorating and these went to my daughter's kinder...
